Implant Maintenance
All implants must be cleaned and taken care of like normal teeth. Regular brushing and flossing are paramount for sustained health and longevity. Otherwise, implants suffer a similar condition to teeth when they are neglected to be cleaned appropriately. This chronic condition known as peri-implantitis (similar to periodontitis) is seen when the hygiene is neglected resulting in the gum and bone becoming inflamed and infected- resorbing over time and leading to implant failure. Consequently, you will also be left with a soft tissue and bony defect.
There are various techniques and products available (e.g. floss, pixters & waterpik) for cleaning and maintaining your implant(s) which are very much dependent on the actual restoration planned or existing coupled with your hand dexterity.
