Overview
Dental implants are one of the most revolutionary advances in modern dentistry, which has resulted in this procedure becoming the most popular treatment option for missing teeth. This innovative option allows patients to regain full functional and natural appearing smiles. In comparison, dental implants are the alternative solution to ordinary tooth supported bridges or conventional dentures in filling the gap(s) caused by missing teeth.
A single missing tooth can lead to the loss of additional teeth and ultimately a change in your facial appearance over a period of time. Furthermore, adjacent teeth can collapse, drift or tilt into the gap, while teeth in the opposing jaw may grow into the gap (supraeruption). Missing teeth can affect nutrition and well being via a loss of function and self esteem.

What are dental implants?
A tooth implant is a durable titanium cylinder (root) that is surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone. After placement, the implant will fuse with the jawbone (osteointegration) forming what is termed an integrated implant.
Similar to crowns, bridges and dentures on normal teeth (tooth-born restorations); dental implants can also be restored with crowns, bridges or dentures alike (implant-born restorations).

Choosing an implant dentist
In implant dentistry, dentists are often divided into two groups.
- Restorative dentists whom only restore implants with crowns, bridges, or dentures;
- Surgical dentists who place the implants for the restorative dentist or may also restore their own implants
At Mosman Dentistry all of our dentists undertake the surgical and restorative phases of all implants- resulting for more convenience, affordability and time efficiency for patients.
Additionally, we have other dentists across Sydney who refer their patients to our practice for the surgical placement of implants based on our surgical experience, gold standard protocol and procedures and above all else, our patient care that we provide.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, we encourage you to seek a second opinion for another appropriately qualified health practitioner.
Implant Maintenance
All implants must be cleaned and taken care of like normal teeth. Regular brushing and flossing are paramount for sustained health and longevity. Otherwise, implants suffer a similar condition to teeth when they are neglected to be cleaned appropriately. This chronic condition known as peri-implantitis (similar to periodontitis) is seen when the hygiene is neglected resulting in the gum and bone becoming inflamed and infected- resorbing overtime and leading to implant failure- with eventual lose of your implant. Consequently, you will also be left with a soft tissue and bony defect.
There are various techniques and products available (floss, pixters & waterpik) for cleaning and maintaining your implant(s) which are very much dependent on the actual restoration planned or existing, and your hand dexterity.
